Anita Harris is a Melbourne based performer who sings a whole heap o’ jazz in keys that make most horn players cringe. Seriously. Horn players… cringing… all over the country.
Having said that, Anita has been performing Jazz in Australia for well over a decade, and has built a reputation, according to Australian Jazz Scene Jan 2007, as “One of Australia’s finest female jazz vocalists”. With a large repertoire of jazz gems, a growing catalogue of recordings and some of Melbourne’s finest musicians on hand to work by her side, this lady’s mellow, creamy style looks set to become a staple part of any jazz lover’s diet.
If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to catch Anita about town, take the advice given by Australian Jazz Scene when reviewing 2005 release, The Wee Small Hours: “Don’t miss Anita in live performance when she comes to a venue near you.” (R. Spain. Vol 6, Issue 7, April 2006.)

2008 held some terrific jazz moments. For the Anita Harris Quartet, the year marked a return to all the usual festivals and the band responded to invitations to add the Paynesville and Dubbo Jazz Festivals to the calendar with most enjoyable results.
Throughout the year, Pippa Wilson and Anita again joined forces for a bit of duet fun. Most recently, the ladies performed at The Ashwood to a great crowd and earlier in the year the Peninsula Lounge played host to their particular brand of bedlam.
If you haven't had the pleasure, the talented sound engineers from OneEarth Productions recorded grabs of several of the artists at the 2008 Inverloch Jazz Festival way back in March. Follow this link to have a listen to their showreel and if you play close attention, you'll hear snippets of Don't Mean a Thing and Hit That Jive Jack.
On the always welcome subject of Inverloch, don't forget that popular and entertaining festival is coming up in March 2009. In addition to Anita Harris and Friends, and ARQ featuring Pippa and Anita, the Well Versed Harris Duo will be doing their best to explore their favorite Jazz Verses. Expect some old favorites and some verses that have been long forgotten. Jordan Harris, who some will remember made his jazz festival debut in '08 at the RSL (at the tender age of 10), is fired up for his return for the coming Labor Day Weekend.
If you looking to catch Anita a little earlier than the March long weekend the main event on February's Jazz Calendar are the always wonderful Valentine's Day picnic at Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick. With Valentine's day falling on a Saturday this year, this looks set to be the perfect choice for a romantic evening. For full details of this and other upcoming events, keep an eye on our gigs page.
